We have only just begun the research to gather the history of the property on which Willow Creek Golf Community sits today. We do know that at one point, it was a working peach orchard; and that in the summer of 1995, the family of Willow Creek resident, Sandy MacIlwinen, took over the development of our community from Piedmont Land Development, Inc. of Greenwood, South Carolina.

Clues to the property's history may lie in our little cemetery, located on the pond on Tupelo Drive. From headstones found there, (and with the help of the Internet), we have discovered a descendant of the Mayfield family, who once owned this property.

Below is a reproduction of the information collected from the two headstones in the Willow Creek Cemetery. In addition to these two headstones, there are 22 upright, large rocks - which we have been told usually marked the graves of slaves.

From the local Mayfield family member, we were given the following information:
"I have heard this cemetery existed, however, I've not been there - I would love to come and see the stones.
Sarah Bennett Mayfield b. Dec 25, 1819 was the daughter of Hiram and Rebecca Anderson Bennett. I am not sure of which Mayfield she married - even tho I'm from this line of Mayfields. Rebecca had a sister named Martha who also married a Bennett - John T Bennett. Rebecca had a brother named James who is probably the father of Sarah Elizabeth Anderson.
These Andersons were the children of Denny and Elizabeth Massey Anderson. Denny Anderson was the son of William and Rebecca Denny Anderson who came to Spartanburg County from Ireland prior to 1800. Elizabeth Massey was the daughter of William Massey of Halifax, NC...."
